Company of Heroes: Mission 13 „Mortain Counterattack” I was doing it on expert, and to get to this level I lost my HQ. I have no engineers, and no way of getting them. Makes this level extremly hard with only one howitzer and to Barracks. Very Hard. |

the axis command spawns in one of two places for this map, either where marked in the map above, or in the top right corner of the map, next to the 88s.
Tanks, Rangers, or Paratroopers with upgraded guns, are a must have for this map. |

I think I am going to have to replay the previous mission so that I finish with enough troops to cope with this mission. I finished with too few units surviving from the previous mission so when you combine this with lack of additional manpower points - it makes it very difficult to do anything. |

Don't forget you can pause and give orders at any time - makes it tons easier.. |

Charge the north base with reinforcement group to take out half their assets early. |

why isn't there the second base marked on the map?(lower right)and the 88's near it?I think it depends on what territory you have from th previous mission and on the difficulty but I'm not sure...if you have 88's in the lower right corner of the map just shell the are with your Howitzer(range is just enough to hit them) |

This mission reveals a MAJOR flaw in the software A.I. design of the overall COH experience. The manpower/materials ratio ALWAYS favored the expeditionary force (the allies) in the real engagment of Normandy, NOT the Axis. The role of dug in was opposite too, rarely did the allies dig in and wait (the battle of the bulge being the only time and that was in one of the harshest winters in Belgium in decades). I played this mission about 100 times trying to win, with HILL 317 being the key. The algorithm that was used to define the A.I. of the Axis is such that the hill becomes the focus no matter what. DO NOT ever leave this area with exploritory actions. I swear the developers at Relic change the scope of the attack to match your proficiency esp on the hill, again this is unrealistic. If you vacate the hill (317) to reinforce your HQ, wham the hill gets assaulted tremendously. If you build up the hill, the Axis units bypass it and attack your HQ. Since I use tank traps as an area denial tactic to prevent armor flanking me, I have also seen where Axis armor magically comes onto a map from an off sector access road "through" a tank trap. Come on Relic. Then I broke out at a point heading toward the major Axis base in the upper left (NW??) of the map and WHAM, no less than 14 AFV`s were waiting at the bottom all stacked up against each other. Luckily most were Oestwinds or Pumas with a few Stugs and Panzer IV`s (and I used the Pershing with engineer repair backup to make this advance). I could never get off the hill and there were literally over 25 hulks of armor sitting below me with a strategic 88 waiting (that I relentlessly hit with 105mm barages but pioneers kept rebuilding). I just sat there as the victory points unwound for the Axis (I had sent the rest of my armor to the farm and held it, the villa I locked with tank traps (for armor) and a Greyhound to prevent engineer advances) and the AFV units kept coming. Where did the Axis get the munitions and fuel to build that many AFV`s to attack me. Only in Relic`s unrealistic world could that have happened. And why am I limited to 75 total manpower points, but the Axis can waste man and material like they had a "blank check" for resources. I was soooooo P.O.ed with COH I almost quit after this level. Funny thing was my first play (many hours ago) I lost Mortain and my HQ and the attack was a lot less complicated though I had so little left I was pretty much helpless -- Relic`s A.I. must have been throwing me a bone. EXTREMELY unrealistic level !!! |

I have to say I enjoyed playing COH up to this mission.Throughout the game I found the game to be challenging and fairly even. On this mission I was reduced to changing the gameplay down to easy and saw no change in the AI. Games sometimes start easy in the beginning then become more challenging. this concept I appreciate. When the game becomes completely unbalanced I become frustrated. I've tried this missiom literally dozens of times trying different angles and approaches while being completely overun. Perhaps another dozen attempts may provide a sliver of an opportunity to penetrate the enemy forces. At no time should the gameplay become this unevenly balanced. I've encountered a few in my life time. I've served in the military. In a real life situation we would have pulled back or called in alot of additional support. Unrealistic is the proper description to this particular mission. Marvel comics has reinvented some of our favorite superhero's to the 20th century for our entertainment. I'm not sure if they could even counterbalance the AI on this mission. I'm not being entertained. |

I know how frustrating this level can be, but it is winnable (is that a word??).
spoiler stop The A.I. Axis is soooo focused on the hill strategic point (SP) that you can use that as an advantage. Take the Abbey SP west of the hill and lock it out with tank traps stranding an M8 for infantry assaults. That is SP#1. For the HILL (SP#2), build tank traps locking out all armor approachs, this takes time and you will lose a lot of engineers, but it can be done with Sherman on "point". Especially lock out the 105mm howitzer (tank traps and MG nests) so nothing gets near it.
Now with SP#1 and SP#2 secure, your score stops depleting. Also start locking out Mortain so that no armor gets into your rear area. Next grab territory around Mortain to build up your "bank". Get a sniper and take out the 88mm near the farm to the far east of the hill and after staging armor around Mortain, move it towar that SP at the farm, engineers or a rifle until should be handy to take the point. Once you have sufficient armor around the Farm and SP#3 on your side, the Axis bank starts to deplete. This is where the A.I. gets really whacked, an all out assault on the hill will start since they are losing points, wave after suicidal wave of troops and engineers will assualt. Leaving a quad locked-in up there with at least 2 engineers (for repair) and the howitzer (maybe a mortor team if you feel like it) and it should hold. Watch the Axis points dwindle to nothing and the mission ends with a V. It took me hours of frustrating (and swearing...) to get there, but that finally gave me a completion. |

The key to this level in my opinion is simple and can't be overstated:
Storm the north base at once and demolish the axis HQ as well as the other buildings.
This takes the teeth out of the axis and following the HQ destruction they didn't produce anything. I simply had to hunt down and eliminate the rest of the axis units and buildings... easy piecy
My first attempt was unsuccessful because I tried to build my forces up slowly... major major mistake. |

This mission is easy (on expert level also) if u in the former mission laid tank traps blocking all approaches.
Quickly lay traps where line might be broken: forget about the flag furtherst out, you only need three of the four. So when all tanks are blocked out you have three flags beginning countdown. Enemies will never get three and any count, and with all 500 u get the medal.
Make sure that your fences and nest with crossfire are far away from tanktraps, so tanks can shoot them: which mean traps must be so far out, that they don't reach flags to protect.
Second objective can be done with multiple shots with howitzer...
Enemy engineers can cut your fences, but they won't last in cross-fire. And their bazookas and ATs will quickly destroy your tanks, so keep em out with cross-fire.
If u want to kill their artillary tank, shoot it with howitzer. |

I recently picked this game up used and loved it! Until this level. It totally derails the style, mood, and depth of game play. This type of level is best left to multiplayer not a campaign type game. The odds are ridiculous, theres no time for planning, zero realism. Hugely disappointed at this point in the game and honestly dont even feel like playing. Any concrete advice from any players out there would be welcome. Thanks!
p.s.- Hows the newest version? Should I pick it up? |
